Find data insights that help explain patterns in the data, common key statistics, and share indicators. Summarizing data is similar to grouping data, but generates summary statistics (i.e. mean, median, maximum) for the complete data view or dataset.
- Go to the Data View Templates page. Click the button to SUMMARIZE DATA under Summarize.
-
Give your Data View a Title. Click the toggle to the right if you want to make this data public; toggle left if you want to keep it private. This can always be updated later .
-
Select a Data Source. Here we will use the NYC Tree Census data source. The Columns will automatically populate with a preview of the columns and description of the columns from the data source.
- Choose the columns to add to your Data View, by clicking the “+” icon next to each column name. Here we will add the columns: boroname (NYC Borough), tree_id (individual numerical ID), status, spc_common (common name), and tree_dbh (diameter).
- To summarize a column, click on the gear icon next to each column. This allows you to perform an array of basic summary statistics on that column. Select from Count, Sum, Average, Minimum, Maximum, Median, Mode, and several others. Here, we will select Average to calculate the average diameter based on the tree_dbh column. We will call that new column ave_diameter .
- Click the button at the bottom of the page for Save Data View. Your Data View is now ready for further analysis or visualization.
